A esta situación de rebeldía del ejército contra el gobierno de Madrid, se llegó tras una profunda crisis económica y política que a partir de 1866 supuso el comienzo de la búsqueda de distintas alternativas a la monarquía Isabelina. En el ámbito económico, alrededor de 1866, hubo una crisis en Europa, la cual dentro de nuestro país se convirtió en una auténtica crisis de subsistencia producida por las malas cosechas y la falta de alimento básico. El valor de las acciones en bolsa perdieron todo su valor y los inversores no recuperaron su dinero. Cerraron bancos y entidades financieras arrastrados por las pérdidas de las acciones. También hubo una crisis industrial en Cataluña (ya que era la única zona española auténticamente industrializada) a causa del hambre de algodón que se produjo durante la Guerra de Secesión de EEUU que trajo una disminución de la producción del algodón del que se nutrían las fábricas catalanas. Otro gran problema de la España de la época fue el paro desorbitado que se tradujo en una fuerte conflictividad social.
