We were out in the middle of the river again, and there were big waves, and it was full of floating tree trunks, and the water was the color of milky coffee. Then, in the blink of an eye, the transom fell off the boat. The motor had broken off and fallen into the water, taking the flat board with it. Water started pouring into the boat and was swilling around our ankles. I thought that we'd had it, you know, that our time was up and we were going under. It was one of those moments when your whole life goes flashing before your eyes.

But then, when we slowed down, the front of the boat wasn't up in the air anymore, and the back wasn't so low in the water; it all leveled out. So, the water stopped pouring into the boat. We were still stuck out in the middle of the river with no motor, but at least we were floating. Then, after about half an hour, a ferry boat came past, and our guide started waving to it. They came and rescued us and took us back to Manaus. I was glad to be back on dry land.

Estábamos nuevamente en medio del río, y había grandes olas. El río estaba lleno de troncos de árboles flotantes, y el agua era del color del café con leche. Luego, en un abrir y cerrar de ojos, la popa del barco se desprendió.

El motor se había roto y caído al agua, llevándose consigo la tabla de popa. El agua comenzó a verterse en el bote y se arremolinaba alrededor de nuestros tobillos. Pensé que ya no teníamos remedio, que nuestro tiempo se había acabado y que nos estábamos hundiendo. Fue uno de esos momentos en los que toda tu vida transcurre ante tus ojos.

Pero luego, cuando disminuimos la velocidad, la proa del bote ya no se elevaba y la popa no estaba tan sumergida; todo se niveló. Así, el agua dejó de entrar al bote. Todavía estábamos atrapados en medio del río sin motor, pero al menos estábamos flotando. Después de aproximadamente media hora, un transbordador pasó y nuestro guía comenzó a saludarlo. Vinieron, nos rescataron y nos llevaron de regreso a Manaus. Me alegré de estar de vuelta en tierra firme.
