Reported Speech: Declaraciones

El estilo indirecto, también conocido como reported speech, se utiliza para comunicar lo que otra persona ha dicho, pero sin citar sus palabras exactas. A continuación, se presentan las transformaciones más comunes:

  • Presente Simple a Pasado Simple
    • "He works in London," said he. = She said that he worked in London.
  • Presente Continuo a Pasado Continuo
    • "They are building a house," he said. = He said that they were building a house.
  • Presente Perfecto a Pasado Perfecto
    • "She has written an email," Tom said. = Tom said that she had written an email.
  • Presente Perfecto Continuo a Pasado Perfecto Continuo
    • "The baby has been crying all day," mum said. = Mum said that the baby had been crying all day.
  • Pasado Simple a Pasado Perfecto
    • "It rained cats and dogs," the man said. = The man said that it had rained cats and dogs.
  • Can a Could
    • "I can go to the party," Lola said. = Lola said that she could go to the party.
  • Will a Would
    • "The students will pass the exam," said the teacher. = The teacher said that the students would pass the exam.
  • Must a Had to
    • "He must get up early," = I said that he had to get up early.
  • May a Might
    • "It may snow," he said = He said that it might snow.

Reported Speech: Órdenes

  • Afirmativa
    • "Sit down," he said to me = He told me to sit down.
  • Negativa
    • "Don't shout at me," she said to Peter. = She told Peter not to shout at her.

Reported Speech: Expresiones de Tiempo y Lugar

Las expresiones de tiempo y lugar también cambian en el estilo indirecto:

  • now = then
  • yesterday = the day before
  • last month/ last year = the month before/ the year before
  • tomorrow = the following day
  • tomorrow afternoon / tomorrow morning = the next afternoon / the next morning
  • next Monday / next week = the following Monday / the following week
  • ago = before
  • today = that day
  • tonight = that night
  • here = there
  • this = that
  • these = those

Reported Speech: Preguntas

  • Yes/No Questions (Preguntas de sí/no)
    • "Do you speak German?" he asked me. = He asked me if I spoke German.
    • "Are you British or American?" he asked her. = He asked her if she was British or American.
  • Wh-Questions (Preguntas con pronombre interrogativo)
    • "What is your sister's name?" he asked her = He asked her what her sister's name was.
    • "Whose car is this?" we wondered = We wondered whose car that was.

  • my = mi
  • your = tu, tus, (de tú) su, sus (de usted)
