The title of Man of Steel tells you what to expect when purchasing a ticket for this huge summer blockbuster: a radical break with the past. The absence of the word "Superman" tips us off that this new picture is less a standard reboot and more a top-to-bottom re-imagining. Whether you approve of the result depends on what you think Superman is, or should be.
A Darker, Grittier Vision
Either way, it is a 2013 version of the story: big, dark, complicated, and violent, featuring 9/11-esque collapsing skyscrapers and dusty disaster survivors. It has a good heart and is sincere, but it's not particularly funny or sweet.
Superman's Modern Persona
Superman is hardened, alienated, and frustrated; chiseled and handsome, yet not inclined to courtly romance. The film portrays a planet so terrorized by an evil cabal and apocalyptic threats that anyone presented as a good guy must have ulterior motives. Steel is what you need to have in your spine if you are going to be 'super' in this world.
