1. More than 1,200 special effects shots were used in The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, more than any other film in history.
2. All the languages found in the books are represented in the film trilogy. Elvish subtitles were used for those of us who haven't learned Elvish yet!
3. Howard Shore composed the music for the soundtrack. He has written the soundtracks of many films, including The Cell, Ed Wood, Mrs. Doubtfire, and The Silence of the Lambs.
4. The trilogy was filmed in New Zealand, the perfect setting for Middle-earth. Paintings and digital effects were also used to create scenery. The Land of the Dwarves, for example, is really a miniature film set. After the set was built, it was filmed and enlarged to look real.
5. The character Gollum is computer-animated. The role of Gollum is played by British actor Andy Serkis, and the animated Gollum was drawn over Serkis' screen image. So when you see Gollum move in the film, you are actually watching Serkis' "digitally costumed" body move. Serkis' real voice was also used.
6. Some of the Dwarves in the films, especially the larger roles such as Gimli, are played by a cast of regular-sized actors.
