Ellen and her children went to visit their uncle at his house, which was three miles away, to spend the day. As evening fell, they had to return home. However, they couldn't use the normal dirt road since the rain that had fallen in the last few days made it impassable. Instead, they had to cross the train tracks in the darkness. As evening fell, the sounds of the trees and an owl flying added to the eerie atmosphere.

This made Faye scared. After some time passed, she heard footsteps and told her mother. Her mother reassured her that it was nothing. They turned halfway, pointed the lantern into the darkness, and saw nothing. Then, the mother said to pray, saying, "God always protects us." They continued on until they arrived home.
