You: (1) Good evening, sir. [Si nos fijamos en la respuesta, esta es la mejor posibilidad]
Mr Black: Good evening.
You: (2) How are you?
Mr Black: I'm alright, but I feel a little bit tired, I'm afraid.
You: Well, that won't take long. (3) Do you speak Spanish?
Mr Black: Oh, no, I'm afraid I don't speak Spanish. Only English.
You: OK, then, I need to ask you some questions to fill in this form. (4) What's your (full) name?

Mr Black: Andrew Black, but please, call me Andy. Everybody calls me Andy.
You: Ok, Andy, (5) where are you from?
Mr Black: Oh, I'm from Cardiff. That's in Wales.
You: Oh, so you're Welsh. (6) Do you live in Cardiff (in Wales)? [Como responde 'London', la pregunta más adecuada se refiere a una ciudad (Cardiff), pero también podemos preguntar por el país (Wales)]
Mr Black: Oh, no! I live in London, but I prefer living in Spain. The climate, the food... You know what I mean.

You: Yes, I understand. (7) How old are you?
Mr Black: I'm 79, but I'll be 80 next week. We're all getting old, aren't we?
You: Yeah, I'm afraid we are. Have you got a mobile phone, Andy?
Mr Black: Yes, I have. My daughter Clara gave it to me for Christmas.
You: Well, (8) what's your phone number? Do you remember?
Mr Black: I don't remember, but I wrote it down somewhere. Let's see... oh, here it is. It's 366 444422.
You: Thank you, Andy. (9) Have you got any family?
Mr Black: Family? Yes, I've got two children, Clara, that's the oldest, and Richard. My wife died 10 years ago, poor Becky.
You: Ok, one last question, Andy, (10) what do you like (doing)? / what are your hobbies?

Black: Well, I like the cinema. Westerns are my favourite. I also like watching TV. My Clara used to say that...
You: Thanks, Andy. That's all for the moment.

We are sorry to inform you that your mother (0) had an accident last Monday. She (1) was walking down the stairs when she (2) missed the last step and (3) fell down to the floor. The result was that she (4) broke her hipbone and received a serious blow on her head. We (5) took her to hospital in an ambulance immediately. She (6) was conscious all the time. The doctors decided that she should have an operation. Fortunately, everything (7) went well.

She (8) is recovering in hospital now. Everything is alright, but she'll have to go through a long period of convalescence before she can walk again. They give her a painkiller because she (9) suffers/is suffering a great pain in her hip. [Las dos formas son correctas, dependiendo de cómo entendamos la acción] Mrs Holmes (10) wants you here with her, so could you please come as soon as possible? That would be very convenient both for your mother and for ourselves.

Receptionist: Holmes Insurance Company. Hello?
You: Hello, (1) can I speak with Richard Holmes please?
Receptionist: Who's calling?
You: Oh, (2) this is... [your name here], I'm calling from the Residència Sant Narcís. That's an old people's home in Spain.

Receptionist: Ok, (3) one moment, please.
You: Thanks.
(Three minutes later)
Receptionist: Hello? Mr Holmes is in a meeting right now. (4) Could you call back later?
You: No, I'm afraid I can't call back later. It's rather urgent.
Receptionist: Well, (5) can I take a message?

You: No, no message, thanks. I'd like to talk to him personally. Tell him it concerns his mother.
Receptionist: Ok, I'll see if he can talk to you now. (6) One moment.

Mr Holmes: Richard Holmes speaking.
You: Hello, Mr Holmes. I'm calling about your mother. (7) I'm sorry to tell you that she had an accident. She fell down the stairs and broke her hipbone.

Mr Holmes: Oh, my God! Is she alright?
You: Well, she's in hospital right now, but she'll be alright. Mrs Holmes wants you to come as soon as possible.
Mr Holmes: (8) Excuse me? [Si nos fijamos en la línea que viene a continuación, aquí tendremos que poner una frase para pedir a la otra persona que repita lo que acaba de decir. Algunas frases para pedir esto están indicadas en el apartado 3.2.2. de la unidad 1 del libro]
You: I said: she wants you to come as soon as possible.
Mr Holmes: Oh, yes, of course. I can be there on Saturday evening. Is that alright?
You: Yes, fine, Mr Holmes. (9) Thanks.
Mr Holmes: (10) You're welcome. Bye.

1. Well, Mr Holmes, you should keep your mother company. She says she feels quite lonely and wants to be with you.

2. You're right, thanks.

3. If I were you, I would be patient. She requires a lot of time and attention.

4. Yes, that's a good idea. Thank you!

5. I also advise talking to her. She loves talking and she has nobody to talk to here.

6. Thank you. I'll do that.

7. Oh, and you had better take your mother out in a wheelchair. She would like some fresh air.

8. Thank you, but I'm afraid I can't do that. (It's too windy for my mother today)

9. Of course, if something is wrong, I advise you to call the nurse. She will come immediately.

10. Thank you. I'll do that.
