1. Do you think you should change your eating habits? Explain

I think I have healthy eating habits and so it is not necessary for me to change them, even though there are a few things that I could do better if I wanted my diet to be totally healthy. I eat fruit and vegetables every day, but I only eat one or two pieces of fruit when the appropriate amount should be at least three. In addition, I do not usually eat whole-grain bread or cereals, but doctors advise eating them because of their fiber, which is good for the organism. But as a whole, I think my diet is balanced, as I try to eat in a varied way.

2. Is obesity a social problem nowadays? Why?

I think that obesity, especially in children, is becoming an increasing problem nowadays. In fact, this is a current topic in the news, since society is becoming afraid that obesity will become as widespread as it has become in other countries, such as the USA.

It appears that children are eating less healthy food and more fast food than they used to a few years ago, and that DVD players, computer games and mobile phones have replaced bikes and skateboards as birthday presents. Therefore, children exercise less and eat worse than they should, and so it is not so uncommon nowadays to see overweight children.

3. Should public places like hotels and restaurants have strict regulations that limit access to pets? Discuss.

There are places where access to pets is not limited, and I think it is very important that this should be strictly regulated. In the same way that there are smoking and non-smoking areas at restaurants, hotels and other public places, there should be regulations that limit access to pets.

I believe this is especially urgent in places like supermarkets or restaurants where food is involved. As a customer, I do not like having a pet sitting at the table next to me while I am having lunch with friends, or running along the supermarket corridors while I am doing the shopping. In my opinion, owners sometimes do not realize that their pets might bother other people, and so regulations are needed in order for everybody to be at ease everywhere.

4. Which is your favourite pet? Describe it and explain why you like it.

My favourite pet is, without a doubt, the dog. I have had two dogs so far and I agree with the saying that “dogs are a man's best friend”.

Dogs are common pets at homes, and people often keep them as pets or to guard or hunt. There are many different breeds of dogs, but my favourite is the Labrador. Labradors are large dogs, and their hair is short and dense, usually black or gold. Labradors are often used as assistance dogs because they are gentle, intelligent and good-natured. In addition, they are used by the police because of their detection and working abilities.

But I like dogs because they are loyal and friendly, and I think they make homes much livelier. You will never get bored if you have a dog around to play with!

5. Are travel books popular with modern readers? Give reasons for your answer

There are many examples of travel books that have been turned into literary masterpieces as well as popular bestsellers. Books like Gulliver's Travels or Around the World in Eighty Days have been read by generations of readers worldwide. However, I think that travel books are not as popular today as they used to be in the past. It seems to me that most of the books that are bestsellers in bookshops do not deal with travel.

I believe that one reason for this is that foreign countries seem more familiar and accessible now than a few centuries ago. Both because of television, the internet and the fact that travelling abroad is more widespread nowadays than in the past, modern readers do not need to read stories about faraway places, but can visit them instead. I really believe that modern readers prefer travelling to reading about travel. Or at least, that is my case.

6. If you could choose a historical period to live in, which one would you choose and why?

It is not easy to choose a historical period to live in, as I think that all of them can be very appealing, but at the same time they all have many drawbacks. But if I had to choose an attractive age to live in, I would probably like to experience the exciting events taking place in America in the early nineteenth century. It was a time when America had recently achieved independence from the British Empire, and it must have been an age of captivating changes, when new political, economic, and social decisions were being taken.

It was a time of outstanding political figures like Thomas Jefferson or Abraham Lincoln, and of extraordinary writers, such as Walt Whitman or Herman Melville. Like them, ordinary people had to take the initiative and start new projects so as not to be left behind at a time of transition.

7. Do you think that singing should be taught at school? Give reasons for your answer

There are many people who believe that a subject such as Music should not be taught at school but outside the school timetable. However, I believe that these subjects are important in a child's development and should not be ignored within the school framework. Moreover, I think that singing should be part of the school curriculum, even if only for the first year, because it may be the only contact that children have with it.

In addition, not every family has the opportunity to pay for private singing lessons, and if the school provided their students with them, there would be some children with excellent singing skills who would realize their talent at school and could work on it outside school.

So, on the whole, I agree with the text that singing is gratifying and as such, it should be taught at school.

8. What is your favourite type of music?

Nowadays there are so many types of music that it is hard to listen to just one. However, if I have to choose one out of all the different trends, I think I will single out rock music.

I like listening to rock music because there are many styles involved in it, and many good bands as well as solo artists who have devoted their talent to this type of music. Today, Bob Dylan or the Rolling Stones may seem out of date, but their music is still heard in discos, on the radio, or in film soundtracks, and their lyrics still inspire many young artists.

Nevertheless, I like listening to nearly all types of music, as I think it is fulfilling and relaxing.
