Historia 1
This story is about Dr. Hamilton, who loved zoology, especially entomology. He had little money, so he needed a job. One day, he found an opportunity which required his abilities. Then a wealthy man, Lord Linchmere, gave him an interview and accepted him. During the interview, Dr. Hamilton met the Lord's sister, who had a scar on her face. This was strange.
This job consisted of Hamilton going on a trip with Linchmere and protecting him at every moment. Besides, Hamilton should carry his beetle collection. Hamilton was worried because Linchmere didn't give details about the job.
When they arrived at the place, Hamilton met Mr. Thomas, Linchmere's brother-in-law, who was the greatest authority on beetles in the world. He looked unfriendly and reluctant to receive visitors. Hamilton and Thomas had beetles in common, so Thomas relaxed.
When night came, they went to bed, and Linchmere asked Hamilton to stay alert, but he accepted. It seemed as if Lord Linchmere was expecting an attack.
That night, Thomas attacked Linchmere, and Hamilton helped him and protected him. The following day, Linchmere explained to Hamilton that Thomas suffered from schizophrenia and sometimes had violent attacks. He needed medical treatment, which is why Dr. Hamilton was chosen.
Historia 2
This story is about a murder on a train in which several speculations were made, but none were correct, since James tells the truth.
John Doe was a man who was involved in swindling people and committing crimes. He worked with McCoy, one of his friends, who was also a con man. John and Edward were brothers, and their mother was always very concerned about her son John; she wanted what was best for him. Edward got his brother a job in another city, keeping him away from his friend McCoy. But one day Edward made the bad decision to rat out McCoy while he was playing cards, and people learned he was a con man.
McCoy, seeking revenge, went looking for John and convinced him to cheat again. One day the two boarded a train, both in disguise. When they arrived at the train, they met John's brother, and McCoy pointed a weapon at him, but he hit John by accident. Then Edward and McCoy threw him out the window, and along the way they talked about what had happened.
They talked about how they would never find out who John was, since he had no documentation and no one could know his identity. A few weeks later, Edward and John's mother died believing their son was well and earning a living.
Historia 3
The story is about a man named Marshall King, who had many financial problems. His father believed that his brother would take care of him, but he did not. One day he contacted a distant cousin named Everard King, who lived with his wife, Mrs. King, and a Brazilian cat named Tommy. Everard greeted Marshall at his mansion very enthusiastically.
Mrs. King was not friendly with Marshall, but he only cared about his cousin's money.
One night Marshall explained his visit and why he needed the money, but Everard was unmoved and told him to write him a check.
Before bedtime, he asked Everard if he wanted to see the cat again, which Marshall could not touch, because once it tasted human flesh it would want more.
When they were with the cat, Everard locked Marshall in with the black cat inside, intending to kill him. Marshall dared to escape, but the cat scratched him and he began to bleed; still, he managed to get out of the cage. When Everard came in, he saw that Marshall was on the ground, and the cat went after Everard and killed him.
Weeks later, Marshall's lawyer told him he was the heir, and that if he died, the heir would be his cousin Everard. Marshall paid off all the debts.
