THE CLIENT. Chapter 1.

1. Mark was like a father to Ricky. Give examples. His usual role was to take care of his little brother. In fact, he felt like a ten-year-old father. He'd teach him how to throw a football and ride a bike. He'd warned him against drugs and protected him from the older, more aggressive kids at school. And before their parents' divorce two years earlier, he had protected Ricky from their father, who was usually drunk and had often beaten Mark and their mother.

2. What did the fat, bald man do after he got out of the car? The man was holding a hose. The boys watched as he put one end of it into the tailpipe of the car and the other end into the left back window, which was a little open. Then he got back into the car and closed the door. He's trying to kill himself.

3. How did the man react when Mark tried to save his life? The boys were wondering what to do next when suddenly the man got out of the car again. He was crying and shouting and holding an open whisky bottle. He walked to the back of the car, where he was the hose in the car and shut the door. Ricky nodded his head reluctantly and watched Mark move back to the car. Suddenly, the car door opened and the man's head appeared in the rear-view mirror. The man ran round to the back of the car. Mark tried to stand up and escape, but he fell. He pulled Mark to the open car door, pushed him inside and closed the door again. Then he ran quickly to the other side of the car and got inside.

Chapter 2

1. What happened when Mark took the gun? He was very scared when he took the gun. It felt very heavy and his hands trembled. He was about to pull the trigger when suddenly the man grabbed the gun from him and held it in front of Mark's face. Mark put his head down and began to scream. At exactly the same instant, the man pulled the trigger. The bullet flew above Mark's head and hit the window behind him. Why did Clifford think Muldanno wanted to kill him? Describe briefly what Romey did after he got out of the car and began to cry.

Chapter 3

1. What was Ricky's reaction immediately after Clifford shot himself? He was trembling and making strange, loud noises. Ricky just continued to make more strange noises. It seemed like he was crying, but there were no tears.

2. Why did Mark call 911 to report the suicide? Mark wondered if he should call 911, the police emergency number. The narrow road above the hill was hardly ever used, and Mark knew that if he didn't make the call, Romey's body might not be found for several days. The thought of the body lying there convinced him to call.

3. What two lies did Mark tell Hardy?

Chapter 4

1. Why was it a good thing that Muldanno's trial might be postponed? It would probably be impossible to prove that Muldanno had killed him, because Romey would have died and he was the only one who had the proof.

2. What did Foltrigg do to find out if Clifford had told anyone about the location of the body? The next day he called me at the office. He told me to ignore anything he had possibly said the night before about where the senator's body was buried. Actually, he hadn't mentioned anything about a dead body, but I was curious to see what would happen if I pretended that he had, so I thanked him for the information. Then he definitely insinuated that he knew where the body was.

Chapter 5

1. Why was Mark worried on his way to the cafeteria? Because Ricky might tell the doctor the whole story. Then everyone would know that Mark was lying.

2. How did Hardy help Trumann? They found a child's fingerprint in Clifford's car, so the boy had been there.

3. Why did Mark decide to keep the lawyer's business card that he found? I might need a lawyer if the police ever find out that I lied about Romey. He thought, putting the card in his shirt pocket. He returned to the room and eventually fell asleep.

Chapter 6

1. What did Foltrigg hope to find out from talking to Mark? Foltrigg excitedly began to imagine a happy ending. Mark knew where Senator Baytte's body was buried, Muldanno would be convicted, and Foltrigg would get the media attention he dreamed about.

2. How did Mark react when he discovered that an FBI agent wanted to talk to him? He didn't want to talk to him! Mark suddenly shot up.

Chapter 7

1. What was unusual about Reggie's office and why was this so? It was full of toys. She said she worked with mistreated children.

2. Why was Reggie frightened and what advice did she give Mark? She would take care of everything.

Chapter 8

1. Why did Reggie provide Mark with a tape recorder? She wanted to find out if this agent obeyed the law.

2. What did Trumann lie to Reggie about? She said he couldn't take information from the child without her mother's permission, and she had proof because she had recorded them.

Chapter 9

1. What was the FBI convinced of regarding Mark having been in the car with Clifford? They're convinced that Mark was in the car with Clifford before his death. He got the report from the fingerprint lab an hour ago. Mark's prints on the car are identical to those that were found on the gun, the door, the hose, and even the whisky bottle.

2. Why did Trumann like the idea of putting Mark and his family in the federal witness protection program?

Chapter 10

1. What happened in the elevator? As the door closed, the man pushed Mark into a corner and held a knife to his throat. "If you repeat what Clifford told you, I will kill you, your family, and your lawyer."

2. Why did Reggie think Mark should tell the truth? He could make a mistake telling the story, and then everyone would know he was lying.

3. Why were Foltrigg, Trumann and Fink worried that Gronke hadn't been found? Because he hurt Mark, they wouldn't ever get the information they needed.

Chapter 11

1. How did Boyette try to get support against the waste dump? Because it was approved after the mafia bribed and threatened officials and politicians.

2. Why did Reggie doubt Muldanno's innocence? Because he sent a man to threaten poor Mark.
