Chapter 4
Fame looks at the swinging man with a chair under his feet on the floor. Fame initially thinks that Harker has committed suicide, but Harker has blood on his shirt that was not his own. Therefore, Harker must have been murdered.
On the floor lies a small note containing a poem. On the front, it is written: 'To John Samuel Fame'. The poem reads:
'Great men do not walk easy roads,
Tall men strain under heavy loads.
They bend beneath the weight,
Get tired beneath the load.
They go in pain and hate,
They wander down that road,
But against the wall they stand,
And near one rock they rest their hand.'
— Emil Harker
Suddenly, he hears voices; there are two men searching for the poem. Fame escapes through a window, and as he drives away, he hears the sound of gunshots.
Chapter 5
Fame drives to the town of Darna. Once there, he heads to the Garden Hotel, where he always stays during his visits. Alone in his room, he begins to piece the events together. After a few minutes, he calls Zara and arranges an appointment with her on the hotel terrace. Later, Fame hears on the radio that the golden head of the Pharaoh has been stolen.
Chapter 6
When he meets Zara the next morning, Fame tells her everything that has occurred. Mid-conversation, a waiter informs Fame that there is a telephone call for him. When Fame picks up the receiver and finds nobody on the line, he returns to the terrace. To his surprise, Zara has vanished and the waiter is also gone. Nobody on the hotel staff recognizes the waiter. Immediately after, Fame hears an engine roaring on the other side of the garden wall as a large American car speeds away.
Chapter 7
Fame sprints across the garden and gets into his own vehicle. He pursues the kidnappers, but their car is much faster. Fortunately, he memorizes the license plate: 'ZX 425'. Continuing in the direction the American car was heading, he discovers Zara abandoned by the side of the road. “GET IN!” shouts Fame.
The captors have stolen the poem from Zara after interrogating her, but Fame had wisely made a copy beforehand. Together, they proceed to Don’s hideout. Fame reveals to Don that Harker is dead. Before Don can respond, two cars pull into the driveway: it is Inspector Roland accompanied by his policemen.
Chapter 8
When Inspector Roland enters the room, three policemen begin searching the premises. Half an hour later, the Inspector steps outside with another officer to inspect the boot of a car. Five minutes later, they return. Without warning, the Inspector strides across the room toward Fame and strikes him across the face.
Chapter 9
He hits Fame to snap him awake, demanding information. Roland displays a newspaper clipping concerning the stolen Pharaoh’s head. Neither Don, Zara, nor Fame claims to know anything about the artifact. The Inspector then presents a photograph of a museum reception depicting Harker. On the back of the photo, a note reads: “C 304 Monday”.
Because the Inspector remains unaware of Harker’s death, Fame proposes a deal: 'Let us track down Harker and take Don as a hostage.' Inspector Roland agrees to the plan.
Chapter 10
Fame and Zara deduce the clue on the photograph: the inscription stands for Room 304 and the initial C for Chefren. The Imperial Hotel is the only establishment in town large enough to feature that room number. While finishing their coffee, they spot the bald waiter walking toward his car. They trail him to the Imperial Hotel, discovering that Room 304 belongs to Ezra, while the bald man and his associates are stationed right next door in Room 303.
