Dominando los Verbos Modales en Inglés

Los verbos modales son un tipo de verbo auxiliar que se utiliza para expresar funciones como la posibilidad, la obligación, la habilidad o el permiso. A continuación, exploramos sus usos principales con ejemplos claros.

XIX. mendean, garraioa itsas garraioan oinarritua zegoen, baina, mendearen erdialdetik aurrera, lurrezko garraioa (trenbideak) eraikitzen hasi ziren. Eraikuntza Europarekin konparatuz beranduago izan zen, baina Mediterraneo guztian antzera gertatu zen. Espainiak eraiki zuen lehenengo linea Cuban izan zen, kolonia batean, 1833. urtean. Penintsulan, lehen linea mendearen erdialdea baino pixka bat lehenago eraiki zen: Madril-Aranjuez, Bartzelona-Mataró, Gijón-Langreo (guztien artean ez ziren 500 km-tara iristen).

Habilidad y Permiso

• Can: Habilidad (saber) - Poder [Presente]
• Could: Habilidad (saber) - Poder [Pasado]
• May: Poder (1ª persona singular o plural)
• Be able to: Ser capaz de
• Be allowed to: Tener permiso (momento particular o contrato pasado)

Obligación

• Must: Deber (impuesta por uno mismo)
• Have to: Tener que (leyes, normas)
• Needn’t: No tener que

Necesidad

• Need to: Necesitar, ser necesario. (En negativo e interrogativo no usar “to”)

Consejo

• Should / Ought to: Debería (Ought to no en negativo)
• Had better: Sería mejor

Posibilidad

• May / May not: Puede que (presente o futuro)

En latín, el infinitivo es una forma verbal no personal que presenta diversas formas y funciones. Existen infinitivos de presente activos y pasivos, de perfecto activos y pasivos, y de futuro activos y pasivos. Los más frecuentes son el de presente activo, el de presente pasivo y el de perfecto activo.

El infinitivo cumple dos funciones principales:

• Función Nominal: Actúa en el lugar de un sustantivo.
• Función Verbal: Conserva su carácter de verbo.

Función Nominal del Infinitivo

Cuando el infinitivo funciona como sustantivo, generalmente solo los infinitivos de presente (activo y pasivo) y, muy raramente, el de perfecto activo, poseen esta capacidad. En español, estos infinitivos se traducen por el infinitivo correspondiente.
