English Phonology: Syllables and Phonotactics

Syllable Types

• Closed syllables (v+c): They have at least one consonant following the vowel.
• Open syllables (c+v): They end in a vowel.

Syllable Structure

• The onset: Which includes any consonants that precede the vowel.
• The rhyme: Which subsumes the nuclear element as well as any consonants that might follow it:
  • Peak: Most sonorous element in a syllable.
  • Coda: All consonants that follow the peak.

Phonotactics

In all languages, there are constraints on the way in which these phonemes can be arranged to form syllables. These constraints are known as phonotactic or phoneme sequence constraints, and they severely limit the number of possible syllables.

Overview of Adverbial Types

Conjuncts are a special kind of adverb that connect two parts of a sentence, or even two sentences, by expressing a relationship between them. They are sometimes also called connectors (e.g., however, moreover).

Disjuncts are a special type of adverb that have a sort of superior role to the rest of the sentence. There are two main kinds: either they indicate how the speaker is speaking, or they comment on the content. Again, many of these words can also function as other sorts of adverbs, so position is important to indicate meaning.

Adjuncts provide information about the circumstances in which the event took place (time, place, reason, manner, etc.), or modify the meaning of the whole, or part of the, proposition.
