We were out in the middle of the river again, and there were big waves, and it was full of floating tree trunks, and the water was the color of milky coffee. Then, in the blink of an eye, the transom fell off the boat. The motor had broken off and fallen into the water, taking the flat board with it. Water started pouring into the boat and was swilling around our ankles. I thought that we'd had it, you know, that our time was up and we were going under.
